How to Find Your “Personal Style”

Everyone has their own unique style and fashion preferences. When I discovered my personal style, I started this blog and began wearing clothes I was more comfortable and confident in. Finding my style was a very important thing for me, so I want to help you do the same! Here are my best tips on finding your fashion identity.

Study your Closet Clean-outs

When cleaning out your closet ask yourself:

  1. What types of clothes do I get rid of most?
  2. What do I keep and why?

I find these questions so helpful to learn what you truly wear! Knowing what types of clothes you don’t get much use of is a helpful way to be smart with your next purchases and a way to see how your style is developing.

On this note, make sure to clean out your closet often! I don’t have the biggest closet, so to make space, I like to do a quick closet check in every two months or so to see what I haven’t worn since the last time I cleaned out my closet. Sometimes you may find something you didn’t even know was in there!

Be smart with online shopping!

Yes, online shopping is much more convenient and gives you more options, but it can also cause you to buy things you don’t end up wearing. Going into stores, feeling the material of an item and trying the item on can really help you decide if that item is the right purchase for your preferences.

Questions to ask before buying something

  1. Do I have something like this?
  2. Where would I wear this? What occasion?
  3. What could I pair this item with? Do I already have something to pair it with or do I need to buy something to pair it with?
  4. Will this item age well or is it a trend I will be sick of soon?
  5. Is it worth the money? Could I buy this somewhere else for less?
  6. Is it comfortable enough / do I like the fabric?
  7. Is it season appropriate?
  8. Do I feel confident in this?

Make a Pinterest Board

If you don’t have any idea what style you gravitate towards, make a Pinterest board! (if you don’t already have Pinterest, it is a great place to find fashion you like – I highly recommend it). Put together all your favorite styles, and you will soon see a pattern. This is also a great way to start a clean slate and update your closet; seeing how other people pair clothes is so helpful for choosing the next items you want.

Don’t buy something just because it is on sale

This is something I need to work on myself 🙂 It is so easy to purchase something because it is a good deal, but if you don’t truly like it, you won’t end up wearing it. When clothes are put on sale, it is so easy to look at something you don’t usually like and purchase it because you may want it in the future or it’s a sale you just can’t turn down. My tip for sales is to definitely shop them and go get your good deal, but just be mindful when purchasing sale items you don’t usually go for.

Benefits to Finding Your Personal Style

  • You will be more comfortable in your clothes.

Wearing clothes you pick out with intention will help you make the right decision when you go shopping. Knowing what you are looking for when shopping has helped me choose more practical clothes. For example, I used to never have casual clothes for running errands, but now, I have a bunch of cute and casual tees I know I can rely on for running errands for more casual days.

  • You will save money.

Yes, it takes some money to perfect your wardrobe. But finding your personal style will really help with that shopping problem! Knowing what styles you like and what looks best on you will prevent you from buying everything you see. I used to buy anything I thought was cute, but knowing my style helped with moderation and helped me purchase clothes I know I will wear more than once.
